Elektroteknikkens danske barndom: En videnshistorisk analyse.Louise Karlskov Skyggebjerg - 2020 - Slagmark - Tidsskrift for Idéhistorie 81:95-113.
_The childhood of electrical engineering in Denmark – analysed from a history of knowledge perspective_ With an outset in a performative understanding of knowledge as situated everyday practice, electrical engineering in Denmark in the beginning of the 20th century is analysed. What were the needs of knowledge? How did knowledge about electrical engineering circulate? Which ideas about the present and the future were included? In the article, the concept landscape of knowledge is introduced as an alternative to map of knowledge, (...)

Towards a Slow Decolonisation of Sexual Violence.Louise du Toit - 2019 - Philosophical Journal of Conflict and Violence 3 (1).
This paper explores how we could approach the decolonising of the debate on sexual violence within the South African post-colony. For this purpose, a historical event is analysed: two presbytery hearings of 1843 and 1845, both involving Xhosa convert John Beck Balfour, at the Scottish mission station of Burnshill based in Xhosaland (later called British Caffraria). The hearings involve (extra-)marital and sexual behaviour. Walter Mignolo’s notions of border thinking and colonial difference, further complicated with the idea of colonial-sexual differentiation, are (...)

The Event Divides into Two or the Parallax of Change: Badiou, Žižek, Bosteels, and Johnston.Kelly Louise Rexzy Agra - 2018 - International Journal of Žižek Studies 12 (3).
This paper takes off from a growing preoccupation in Western political-social philosophy on the thinkability of the materiality of change, that became most pronounced in Alain Badiou's philosophy of the event. It traces the development of the discourse of radical change tied to a materialist theory of subjectivity beginning from Badiou, down to the strong criticism posed against it by Slavoj Žižek. This is then followed by the discussion of Bruno Bosteels' potent defense of Badiou's philosophy. Finally, the last part (...)

Local Social Environment, Firm Tax Policy, and Firm Characteristics.Ziqi Gao, Louise Yi Lu & Yangxin Yu - 2019 - Journal of Business Ethics 158 (2):487-506.
This study examines the conditions under which local social environments are likely to influence corporate tax behavior. Using a social capital index at the county level, we find that on average, social capital reduces firms’ aggressive tax avoidance behavior. The impact of social capital on corporate tax avoidance is weaker when managers are under excessive pressure to meet earnings targets, during the periods of financial constraints, and when managers are incentivized to undertake risk. We further find that corporate tax avoidance (...)

    Claiming reality: phenomenology and women's experience.Louise Levesque-Lopman - 1988 - Totowa, N.J.: Rowman & Littlefield.
An important, yet little explored, area of feminist research is women's subjective experience of everyday life. Claiming Reality is the first study to apply the insights of the growing discipline of phenomenological sociology to women's experience, particularly the experience of childbirth, in an attempt to develop a feminist phenomenological perspective.

It is a cliché of self-help advice that there are no problems, only opportunities. The rationale and actions of the BSHS in creating its Global Digital History of Science Festival may be a rare genuine confirmation of this mantra. The global COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 meant that the society's usual annual conference – like everyone else's – had to be cancelled. Once the society decided to go digital, we had a hundred days to organize and deliver our first online festival. (...)

COVID‐19 as moral breakdown: Entangled ethical demands experienced by hospital‐based nurses in the early onset of the pandemic.Caroline Trillingsgaard Mejdahl, Berit Kjærside Nielsen, Mimi Yung Mehlsen, Maj Rafn Hollesen, Mathilde Zilén Pedersen, Georgij Engkjær-Trautwein, Louise Vase Funch & Morten Deleuran Terkildsen - 2023 - Nursing Inquiry 30 (1):e12508.
Abstract2020 saw the rapid onset of a global pandemic caused by the SARS‐CoV‐2 virus. For healthcare systems worldwide, the pandemic called upon quick organization ensuring treatment and containment measures for the new virus disease. Nurses were seen as constituting a vital instrumental professional component in this study. Due to the pandemic's unpredictable and potentially dangerous nature, nurses have faced unprecedented risks and challenges. Based on interviews and free text comment from a survey, this study explores how ethical challenges related to (...)

The Athens of Solon on the François Vase. How does the François Vase function? Among the thematic and formal associations, underlined by François Lissarague, this study emphasises those establishing a connection between the epic and history, notably (...)

‘There is a lot of good in knowing, but there is also a lot of downs’: public views on ethical considerations in population genomic screening.Amelia K. Smit, Gillian Reyes-Marcelino, Louise Keogh, Anne E. Cust & Ainsley J. Newson - 2021 - Journal of Medical Ethics 47 (12):e28-e28.
Publics are key stakeholders in population genomic screening and their perspectives on ethical considerations are relevant to programme design and policy making. Using semi-structured interviews, we explored social views and attitudes towards possible future provision of personalised genomic risk information to populations to inform prevention and/or early detection of relevant conditions. Participants were members of the public who had received information on their personal genomic risk of melanoma as part of a research project. The focus of the analysis presented here (...)

Variations on the ethics of mourning in modern literature in French.Carole Bourne-Taylor & Sara-Louise Cooper (eds.) - 2022 - New York: Peter Lang.
How does modern writing in French grapple with the present absence and absent presence of lost loved ones? How might it challenge and critique the relegation of certain deaths to the realm of the unmournable? What might this reveal about the role of the literary in the French and francophone world and shifting conceptions of the nation state? Essays from the Revolution to the present day explore these questions from a variety of perspectives, bringing out the ways in which mourning (...)

    Conditioning a Professional Exchange Field for Social Innovation.Jo-Louise Huq - 2019 - Business and Society 58 (5):1047-1082.
Social innovation is about solving important problems in new ways. In professional exchange fields, however, structuring and constraining forces make introducing new solutions exceedingly difficult, and known pathways that introduce new solutions are unlikely to be successful. In this article, I examine how social innovation can be encouraged in a professional exchange field. I identify three kinds of disrupting action (entwining problems, reconfiguring arrangements, and actively waiting) that can be used to encourage social innovation. These actions interrupt and expand essential (...)

Cognitive and Emotional Determinants of Automatic Perspective Taking in Healthy Adults.Cristelle Rodriguez, Marie-Louise Montandon, François R. Herrmann, Alan J. Pegna & Panteleimon Giannakopoulos - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
Previous studies using the dot-perspective task postulated that people automatically take into account others' perspective even when it prevents them from achieving their own goals. This human ability may be of key importance for the ascription of mental states and social interactions. The cognitive and emotional determinants of automatic perspective taking is still matter of debate. To address this issue, we examined the performance in the Samson et al. APT task in 91 healthy adults who underwent a detailed neuropsychological testing (...)

Animal data suggest that jet fuels such as JP-8 are associated with hearing deficits when combined with noise and that the effect is more pronounced than with noise exposure alone. Some studies suggest peripheral dysfunction while others suggest central auditory dysfunction. Human data are limited in this regard. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible chronic adverse effects of JP-8 combined with noise exposure on the peripheral and central auditory systems in humans. Fifty-seven participants who were current (...)

Racialization in nursing: Rediscovering Antonio Gramsci’s concepts of hegemony and subalternity.Louise Racine - 2021 - Nursing Inquiry 28 (2):e12398.
Although Gramsci's notions of hegemony and subalternity may seem outdated in this 21st century, a critical examination of the literature shows that these concepts apply in this global pandemic and political context. Racialization is a form of structural violence. In this paper, I also explore Gramsci's’ notion of engaged intellectuals to support the idea of social and political activism in nursing. Nurse scholars call for the decolonization of the discipline. Gramsci's philosophical approach to hegemony can be extended to racialization in (...)
